I have decided to do a mix between a virtual tour of various sites using Google maps and videos and then add some pictures for statues and art that can be found using Google maps. It is important that students be able to see the differences in arts and architecture so that they can more easily compare and contrast the differences.
That'll work fine for your project, but may I suggest that Google Earth might be better for what you're trying to do than Google Maps. You can still embed photos, and the students will be able to see so much more. Plus national geographic, nasa, and others have embedded content for people to learn in Google Earth.

Also, for the tour, be sure to have the students (or yourself) put placemarkers for the different stops in the tour so they can just click on the links to go to the places. These tutorials should show how to do that. Good luck!
